FAQ

Answers to the Most Common Questions

Gators Rugby is the men's and women's rugby program at the University of Florida in Gainesville. The men's club was founded in 1969 and the women's club in 1975. Both compete intercollegiately under USA Rugby governance, play sevens in the fall and fifteens in the spring, and welcome new players with no prior rugby experience.

No. Gators Rugby competes as an intercollegiate club program rather than an NCAA varsity sport, which is the standard structure for collegiate rugby in the United States. Club status doesn't mean recreational — the men's side competes in CRAA Division 1AA and NCR sevens, and the women's side are back-to-back Florida State Champions and 2026 CRC D1AA Shield Champions.

Gators Rugby trains at Hume Field on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, located southwest of Hume Hall. Parking is available at Garage 8 or Flavet Field. Home matches are played on campus.

Yes. Gators Rugby fields two separate programs: the men's club, founded in 1969, and the women's club, founded in 1975. Each has its own roster, coaching staff, practice schedule and match calendar, and the two share a single alumni community through the University of Florida Rugby Alumni Association.

Yes. Gators Rugby accepts players at all skill and fitness levels and a large share of every roster arrives having never touched a rugby ball. Coaches teach the game from the ground up, beginning with how to fall and tackle safely, and no player is put into a match before they're ready.

GatorsRugby.com is published by the University of Florida Rugby Alumni Association, an independent nonprofit alumni organization (EIN 84-4482311). UFRAA is not an official unit of the University of Florida. The site is produced with the men's and women's rugby programs to share news, results and information about Gators Rugby and its alumni community.

Gators Rugby publishes full men's and women's schedules with dates, times and home or away status on gatorsrugby.com. Home matches are open to spectators.

There are three routes: alumni membership in the University of Florida Rugby Alumni Association at $100 a year, a gift to the Florida Rugby Endowment, which is a permanent fund that pays out to both programs every year, or a direct donation. Local businesses can also sponsor the program.
